What Affects the Cost of Home Energy Upgrades in Scotland

A clear look at the factors that shape the price of solar, battery storage, heat pumps and insulation — and why a proper survey is the only way to get an accurate quote for your home.

Every Scottish home is different, which is why a fixed national price list for energy upgrades does not exist in any meaningful sense. A two-bedroom mid-terrace in Glasgow, a detached farmhouse near Stirling and a granite semi in Aberdeen all present different roof areas, different heat-loss profiles and different existing heating systems. The cost of upgrading each one depends on a combination of physical, technical and property-specific factors that can only be properly assessed on site.

This page explains what those factors are, so that when you receive your written quote you can understand why each line is there and how the numbers were arrived at. We do not publish invented prices, averages or "typical" figures, because those numbers mislead — the only accurate price is the one produced after a specialist has actually inspected your home.

Solar panel installations

The cost of a solar panel system depends primarily on the size of the array, which in turn depends on your usable roof area, its orientation and its pitch. A south-facing roof with little shading can accommodate a larger, more productive array than a complex roof with dormers, velko windows or heavy shading from neighbouring buildings or trees. The type of panels, the inverter technology chosen (string inverter versus micro-inverters or optimisers), and the mounting system required for your specific roof covering all influence the final quote.

Scottish weather is often raised as a concern, but solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunshine alone, and modern panels perform well even in overcast conditions common across much of Scotland. Your surveyor will assess the realistic generation potential of your specific roof. Until 31 March 2027, 0% VAT applies on solar panel installations, which is reflected in your quote.

Battery storage

Battery storage allows you to use more of the electricity your panels generate by storing surplus power for the evening and overnight. The cost depends on the usable capacity of the battery (measured in kWh), the chemistry and brand, whether it is AC- or DC-coupled, and how it integrates with your existing or planned solar inverter. A larger household with high evening demand will typically benefit from a larger battery, while a smaller property may be well served by a more compact unit.

Batteries are often installed alongside solar, but they can also be retrofitted to an existing solar array or used to take advantage of time-of-use tariffs by charging on cheaper overnight electricity. 0% VAT currently applies on battery storage installations until 31 March 2027, and your quote will set out the applicable treatment.

Air source heat pumps

An air source heat pump is a low-carbon alternative to a gas or oil boiler, extracting heat from the outside air to warm your home and your hot water. The cost of installing one depends on the size of the unit (sized to your property's heat loss, not its floor area alone), the need for new or upgraded radiators or underfloor heating, hot water cylinder requirements, and the existing pipework and emitters in your home. Properties that are already well insulated are better suited to heat pumps, so your surveyor will also consider whether insulation improvements should come first.

Unlike solar and batteries, heat pump installations do not currently benefit from the 0% VAT rate — standard VAT applies. We do not participate in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is available in England and Wales only and is not applicable to Scottish homeowners.

Insulation

Insulation is often the most cost-effective first step in improving a home's energy performance. The cost depends on the type — loft insulation, underfloor insulation, cavity wall insulation or internal wall insulation for solid-wall properties — and the area to be covered. Many Scottish properties, particularly older stone-built homes in Edinburgh, Glasgow's west end, Aberdeen and the Highlands, have solid walls that require internal or external wall insulation rather than cavity fill, and the approach and cost differ accordingly.

Your surveyor will identify the construction type of your property and recommend the appropriate insulation options. Loft insulation is generally the most straightforward, while underfloor and wall insulation involve more work and therefore carry a higher cost. Each is quoted individually.

Why a survey matters

The factors above interact. A heat pump works best in a well-insulated home, so the most sensible plan may be insulation first, then the heat pump. A solar array's value is increased with battery storage. Your surveyor takes a whole-home view and produces a joined-up recommendation rather than a single-product quote, so you can phase work if you wish and understand the order in which upgrades make most sense.

Loans are available, subject to status, for homeowners considering a paid installation. Your quote sets out the cost of the recommended work and the applicable VAT treatment, and you are under no obligation to proceed.

We install through MCS-certified partners. Loans available, subject to status. 0% VAT applies on solar panels and battery storage until 31 March 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Will you give me an exact price on the day? +

After the in-home survey you receive a written, itemised quote for the upgrades recommended for your property. Because every home is different, we provide a specific quote rather than a generic price list.

Is there any charge for the survey or the quote? +

The survey is no-obligation and arranged so you can understand your options. You are under no pressure to proceed with any installation.

Does the 0% VAT rate apply to my installation? +

0% VAT currently applies on solar panels and battery storage installations until 31 March 2027. Your quote will reflect the applicable VAT treatment for the specific upgrades you choose.
