How a Home Energy Assessment Works

From your first enquiry to a clear written quote, here is exactly what happens at each stage — with no jargon and no obligation.

A home energy assessment is a straightforward, no-pressure process designed to give you clear, specific information about your property. Rather than relying on online estimators or generic advice, a specialist visits your home in person, looks at the features that actually determine which upgrades will work, and produces a written quote tailored to your property and your household. Below is what to expect at each step.

1. You get in touch

You can request a survey by completing the short form on this site or by calling us on 0141 230 0198. We take your name, contact details, postcode and a note of what you are interested in — whether that is solar panels, battery storage, an air source heat pump, insulation, or simply a general survey to understand your options. You do not need to know exactly what you want; the survey is designed to help you decide.

A member of our team will call you back to arrange a convenient time for the in-home visit and to answer any initial questions you may have. There is no charge for arranging the survey and no obligation to proceed at any stage.

2. The in-home survey

On the day, a specialist visits your home at the agreed time. The survey typically takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the size of your property and the range of upgrades being considered. The surveyor will need access to your loft, your heating system (boiler or heat pump, hot water cylinder, radiators or underfloor heating), and the outside of your property to inspect the roof.

During the visit, the surveyor looks at a number of factors specific to your home: the orientation, pitch and condition of your roof; any shading from chimneys, neighbouring buildings or trees; the type and thickness of your existing loft insulation; the construction of your walls (cavity or solid); your current heating system and its condition; your hot water setup; and the general airtightness of the property. They will also ask about your household's energy usage — when you are home, how you heat your hot water, and any rooms that are hard to keep warm.

For solar and battery proposals, the surveyor may take roof measurements and note the location of your consumer unit and any available space for a battery. For heat pump proposals, they will assess the heat loss of your property and the suitability of your existing radiators or underfloor heating. For insulation, they will identify the construction type and the areas where insulation could be added or topped up. This is a fact-finding visit — nothing is installed and no commitment is made.

3. Your written quote

Following the survey, you receive a written, itemised quote setting out the upgrades recommended for your home, the reasons for each recommendation, and the price. Where multiple upgrades are recommended, the quote will set them out individually so you can see the cost of each element and phase the work if you prefer. The applicable VAT treatment is shown clearly — 0% VAT applies on solar panels and battery storage until 31 March 2027, while standard VAT applies to heat pump and insulation work.

The quote is provided for you to consider in your own time. There is no obligation to proceed and no high-pressure sales technique — you are given the information you need to make an informed decision, and that is that. If you have questions about the quote, our team is happy to talk them through.

4. Installation (if you choose to proceed)

If you decide to go ahead with some or all of the recommended upgrades, installation is arranged and carried out by our MCS-certified partner. We install through MCS-certified partners, which means the installation work meets the recognised industry standard for renewable technologies. The installation timeline depends on the scope of work and the weather, and will be discussed with you when you confirm you would like to proceed.

Loans are available, subject to status, for homeowners considering a paid installation. If you would like to discuss this, mention it when you book your survey or when you receive your quote.
